Chin Students' Union

Background

The first ever, unique, Chin Students' body, known as the Rangoon University Hill Chin Students' Union (RUHCSU), was formed in 1946 by a few Chin Students of Rangoon University. Chin students in Rangoon bravely participated in the fight for independence from British colonialism. However, when the General Ne Win seized power by force in 1962, forming Students' Unions was immediately prohibited for fear of students' participants in democracy activities.

In 1988, the people's peaceful movement for democracy (or '8888 Democratic Uprising') broke out in Burma, was led by students. Students from everywhere had been fighting for the cause of democracy and human rights based on a genuine federal system in Burma. The first ever Chin Students' Union was formally formed in Falam Township, Chin State of Burma in August 1988. After the military's coup, many Chin Students drifted out to the neighboring countries of Bangladesh, India, Thailand, and the CSU could not stand anymore in Burma.

After many years, Chin students based in India were of the opinion that it would be good to form a Chin Students' Union in a liberated area, so the present Chin Students' Union came into being in 1995. The Chin Students' Union of North America was also successfully formed in 2006. The CSU has committed to practice and put forth neutral policy while cooperating with other democratic forces in the cause of democratic transition in the Union of Burma.

Mission:

The motto of CSU is 'Stand for Chinland'.

Aims and objectives
  • Highlighting the violations of democracy and human rights in Chinland.
  • Advocating on behalf of the people for equality and self-determination in the Union of Burma together with other minority co-founders of the Union.
  • Preserving and promoting Chin literature, culture and tradition.
  • Extending possible cooperation with other organizations for restoration of democracy in Burma.
